What is AutoCAD?

The CAD programme AutoCAD is a vector-oriented 3D CAD programme developed by the CAD provider Autodesk. It differs from Autodesk Inventor in its ability to insert technical drawings as vector graphics in 2D and 3D and in its programming interfaces. AutoCAD has interfaces to C++, AutoLISP or also to Visual Basic. AutoCAD is therefore often used as a platform for the integration of special products. The .dwg and .dfx file formats developed for AutoCAD are used worldwide for the exchange of CAD data and have become an industry standard. The structure of 3D objects in AutoCAD is based on polylines, arcs, circles and texts. The range of 3D functions for modelling is particularly high in AutoCAD compared to other CAD providers, so that it is used especially by architects, interior designers, geoinformaticians, design specialists, but also mechanical engineers. It is available on Windows and MAC systems. AutoCAD is particularly attractive for building services engineers because special standard parts from the field of building services engineering (e.g. boilers or complex pipe systems) can be integrated via AutoCAD MEP.
